In response to the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) and the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy (ASTP) released a comprehensive report outlining the current state and future vision for laboratory data interoperability across the U.S. healthcare system.

Synensys commends this effort and is proud to have contributed research and systems analysis that informed the report’s findings. Laboratory data is foundational to clinical care, public health, and research. Yet, challenges persist in achieving consistent, standards-based exchange of lab results across diverse systems and settings.

Synensys Contributions:

Synensys collaborated with leading experts from MIT; Nancy Leveson, PhD, John Thomas, PhD, Rodrigo Lopes Rose, MS, and Polly Harrington, MS.

Together with partners from FDA, CDC, Deloitte, CAP, UT Southwestern, UNMC, and JP Systems, Synensys applied System-Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA) to identify hazards in laboratory data workflows, especially in point-of-care and over-the-counter settings.

“Our methodology helps complex orgs like health systems such as the VA scale and sustain their structural and technological modernization efforts while identifying vulnerabilities that can lead to loss of safety, productivity of staff, and resources. As an SDVOSB, we are always happy to contribute to enhancing the safety of our nation’s veterans.”
MJ Hegar, COO, Synensys
