HRO badgeDr. Stephen Powell, Synensys Chief Executive Officer, and Dr. Daniel Wyman, Synensys Chief Medical Officer, hosted a webinar focused on “Quality Improvement in the Modern Era: Moving from Reactive to Proactive Patient Safety” and presented by the American College of Healthcare Executives. With more than 100 attendees the February 2 event, the thought-provoking commentary and questions produced some insightful takeaways for the future of healthcare, including:

  • There is synergy between safety, quality, and productivity. A commitment to system safety drives improvements in quality care and productivity.
  • Operationalizing safety management on the journey to becoming a high-reliability organization requires culture change, including developing and sustaining a culture that understands that we are humans, that humans make mistakes, and that error is inevitable; a culture of open and honest communication and transparency; and a just culture with no shame or blame. This journey takes time, from 12 to 18 months for most organizations.
  • Healthcare organizations need to adapt and adopt a formal threat and error management framework within their daily operations and move from reactive to proactive safety and quality.
